Taiwanese hockey
(04-09-00 ada)
We now know that Brazil is a hockey country, Vascohockey proved that in his article. Now another continent is on the up. The first Asian country on our hockey map is Taiwan. Taiwan does not have a national ice hockey team yet, but the coolest game on earth is SO cool that the Taiwanese can't stay out in the cold for much longer! They started to play hockey, and they started to love hockey. Who knows what may happen next? Right now it might seem like science-fiction but how about an ice hockey game between Taiwan and China? Or the U.S.A. and Iraq? :-) Read more about the history of ice and in-line hockey in Taiwan...
TAIWANESE HOCKEY
(Ashdack)
Because Taiwan is in the subtropics, it's difficult to maintain an ice rink. As a result of this ice skating is not very popular in Taiwan, and so neither is ice hockey. However, in recent years inline skating has become very popular and many people enjoy it. Inline hockey has therefore become more and more popular and many schools and universities now have their own teams.
HOT HOCKEY: Great Britain
(01-09-00 15:11 ada)
One more night. Would you believe it? British league starts
tomorrow! We would like to bring all the previews for upcoming season from
hockey developed countries. Here is the first piece of work - Sekonda Ice
Hockey Superleague.
PREVIEW FOR A LEAGUE IN GREAT BRITAIN
(Chad the Cuddly Wolf)
The Sekonda Ice Hockey Superleague enters it's fifth season by finally
expanding to cover a new club. The Belfast Giants join the eight other
members of the league, which promises to be as close as always. However,
the league has radically changed this season, with a number of noted tough
guys making the hop across the Atlantic to play here.
Hungarian hockey
(01-09-00 ada)
Until recently there's been no reason for Hungarian athletes to learn English. But in 1999 things began to change when a Hungarian basketball player signed for the Chicago Bulls and a Hungarian hockey player was picked in the NHL draft. Who knows?, the time could be near when a Hungarian returns home and says "The NHL? No big deal."? Two guys who are close to realizing this dream are Tamas Groschl and Levente Szuper.
HUNGARY FOR MORE?...
(Spili)
In 1999 the first Hungarian-born player in history was picked for the NHL entry draft. Then, a year later, it happened again! Their names are Tamás Gröschl and Levente Szuper.
The Calgary-drafted Hungarian goalie Levente Szuper will join the Flames on 28th August. He's had a good vacation and has got in some useful training to prepare for the camp. Szuper hopes to sign for Calgary and the club has said that there's a good chance the 20-year-old player will do. In the first season he'll probably be sent to their farm team, St. Johns, or to the OHL-team, the Ottawa 67's. Depending on his performance (nomen est omen) he might be given a chance in the NHL.
The Origins of Ice Hockey
(31-08-00 ada)
Today is a unique and special day. Today's article is not about contemporary hockey but concerns the origin and history of our favourite sport. Echo did some outstanding research, even visiting the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto to find out more. Where does ice hockey come from? What does the word "hockey" mean? These are things every real hockey fan should know. Hockey fans are almost a nation in their own right - a group of people with a similiar culture and a common language - and let's face it, every Chilian knows when the Republic of Chile was founded!
WHO INVENTED HOCKEY?
(Echo)
Who invented hockey, this is a question that will probably never be
answered, and if it is many will still not accept it. The parties in question
who lay claim to have invented the game are as many as their is teams in the
NHL.
The North American indians, the Irish, the English, the Canadians, the
Scottish, and the Americans are the groups who claim to have evidence that
they were the first to play the game.
Our first claim we will look at comes from the Americans, where they make
reference to the game being played by the Dutch immigrants living in
Pennsylvania. Their is no evidence that the game being played was hockey, and
is said the game being played resembled curling. The date that this game took
place is not known for sure but is estimated to be about 1850. This date is to
late in time to be the first. The American claim has no proof or substance to
warrant a real claim to the invention of hockey. The first real mention of the
game in America probably was in Boston around 1860, where Irish Loyalists from
the Nova Scotia area brought with them to the Boston area.
Finnish hockey [fin, fra, cze]
(29-08-00) Few days ago we have published Mixal's article about Finnish national team in English ( Finland couldn't do its best this year). Today you can read it in other languages:
Top 10 Hockey Clichés
(28-08-00 ada)
Ice hockey is a great game to watch on TV. Some people may say that
they cannot see the puck, but most of them are liars. Those who are telling
the truth probably like correspondence chess the most so they can ask a hundred
times where the bishop stands… Every language has its own way of
commentating ice hockey. The British and American way is to describe
exactly what is happening on the ice. E.g.; the Czechs preffer statistics and
off-ice information on the players; the Slovak commentators use methaporas
and are usually very funny. The Russians, Finns, Swedes and other nations
also have their own ways. But all of these guys use a lot of meaningless
clichés. The commentators use them over and over again. Now you have a
chance to get to know the ten most used English language clichés, according
to FlyBear:
TOP 10 HOCKEY CLICHÉS
As the World.OHF is international server, you can find here the articles in several languages. Now you can read the article about Belarusian hockey also in French and Russian language. Other translations to French (by Jack Barron) are coming soon.
British hockey
(25-08-00 ada)
In the distant past, Great Britain was among the leading European
hockey
countries. In 2000, though, Great Britain plays in Pool B of the World
Championship. Many
fans still love to watch ice hockey but the highest "Sekonda Superleague"
is played by Canadians. The Ice hockey league is the only sport league
common for the entire UK- including Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The youth
training of British hockey prospects is at a very low
level. However, this may change. There are less than TEN players born in
Great Britain playing in the Sekonda Superleague. How many exactly? You can
find out in the following article...
BRITISH HOCKEY
(Chad the Cuddly Wolf)
At the 2000 NHL Entry Draft held in Calgary, a very rare thing occurred...
the Philadelphia Flyers 6th pick, 159th overall, was a player called
Colin Shields. A promising forward, Shields became only the second
British
player in history to be drafted by an NHL side. The first was Tony Hand,
who was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers with 256th pick out of 256, in 1986.
British hockey claims to be the "most popular indoor sport in the country"
and this is probably true. However, such claims conveniently ignore the
fact that, despite our miserable weather, most British sport takes place
outdoors.
