Hockey in Belgium is not really popular. I don't really know the reason for
that, maybe it is because we don't really have cold winters here, or don't
have enough place to play. But Belgium placed its mark in hockey history;
they founded together with Bohemia, Switzerland, France and Great Britain
the LIHG (Ligue Internationale de Hockey sur Glace, today's IIHF) and the first world hockey championship was held in Antwerp, they never won any medal though.
Today's hockey isn't doing that good. Belgium got second place in last world
championships pool D in Iceland. There are a lot of naturalised Belgians in
the national team. There are about 20 teams in Belgium. That's not much,
because 10 million people live in this country.
The teams have to compete with many problems; it's too difficult to have ice
in the summer, so they always have to organize summer training camps. In
the team I play with, there weren't enough trainers. All leagues are
national, so it's always a far drive when you're not playing at home.
But even with the problems, hockey in Belgium is re-growing again.
